Balancing work and motherhood can be a challenging experience, but lone parent Gemma Riggens has managed to start a new career due to her involvement with North Lanarkshire’s Working.
Gemma, 24, found work as a Painting and Decorating apprentice at Paterson Builders Ltd in Airdrie and has been able to combine her career with caring for her two young children.
After a period without work and living off benefits, Gemma was determined to get herself into the workplace and help build a better life for her kids.
After a taster session at Motherwell College, Gemma started her course in Painting & Decorating there in September 2008 as part of the Second Chance Apprenticeship Programme. She received financial help towards child care and this course lead directly into her placement at Paterson Builders.
Gemma, from Holytown near Motherwell, said: “I found it very difficult to care for my children when I was without work. Money was tight and the cost of childcare made it more difficult to find full-time work.
“Getting into work has meant I don’t have to constantly worry about money and I can give my children more treats.
“It’s also been really good socially as every day I get to go to new places and meet new people. I love the job and just want to keep learning and improving my skills.”
