PREPARING for the opening of the new Motherwell College at Ravenscraig on Tuesday July 21 has been a moving experience in so many ways for Principal and Chief Executive Hugh Logan and his staff.
There has been a whole raft of emotions as they have watched the new £70 million campus grow and develop in the past two years, nostalgia as they look back over the 40 years in the College building at Dalzell Drive, and the sheer logistics of packing up equipment, records and documents for the move to the new College.
This is a ‘flitting’ of gigantic proportions and it has to be done in time for the students starting on August 24 while continuing the recruitment process.
The new College is set to change the face of learning in Lanarkshire and the message to is being sent out clearly on billboards, buses and plasma screens throughout Lanarkshire – Motherwell College’s new campus is finished, ready and waiting for you!
The College will be open on Wednesday, August 5 between 12 noon and 8pm, when applications can be made for day and evening classes, with full time and part time courses available. There will also be a warm welcome for people who want to have a look at the new state-of-the-art facilities.
Anyone going along to the College that day should watch out for the free Coakley bus service to Ravenscraig.
Hugh Logan is pleased to see things progressing smoothly and there is a great sense of pride to have the new College completed on time.
He explained: “The College has been designed for 21st century learning with state-of-the-art modern technology classrooms, workshops, seminar rooms, theatre and catering facilities.
“As Lanarkshire’s leading College, we are committed to seeing every one of our students reach their full potential. The building has been designed to account for the needs of all students resulting in a facility that encourages access and integration. Today’s students have diverse abilities and come from all walks of life. They hold new expectations for learning.
“We have a wide range of subjects, something for everyone. For anyone who has ambition to go to university, we have excellent links, often into the upper years of degree programmes. We have much to offer and look forward to welcoming our students to the new Motherwell College.”

Car repair is generally seen as a male-dominated industry, but a young woman from Newarthill is set to break into the trade thanks to North Lanarkshire’s Working.
